Olive Prime Aventurine: A women-only mental health and addiction treatment centre
No Woman Should Be Left Without Help
A landmark step toward safe, accessible mental health care for women across Nigeria.
A Quiet Crisis, Now Being Addressed
Across Nigeria, countless women live with untreated mental health conditions and substance use challenges, not because help does not exist, but because access is out of reach.
In many communities, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria, cultural and religious norms rightly emphasise modesty and separation between men and women. However, this has unintentionally created a barrier: families are often unable or unwilling to seek care in mixed-gender facilities.
Fathers hesitate. Husbands delay. Brothers look for alternatives that do not exist.
And so, many women continue to suffer in silence.
A Milestone That Changes Lives
In June 2025, a critical step forward was taken.
Through the efforts of partners within the Intersect Consortium, a dedicated women-only mental health and addiction treatment centre was established, the first of its kind in Nigeria.
A place where women can receive care in an environment that respects cultural values, protects dignity, and ensures privacy.
For many families, this changes everything.
Why This Matters
This center directly expands access to care for women who were previously excluded, not by choice, but by circumstance.
It creates a pathway for:
- Young women whose families could not previously seek help
- Wives and mothers who need treatment but require a protected setting
- Communities where stigma and structure have limited access
By aligning care delivery with cultural realities, we move closer to a system that truly serves everyone.
Our Commitment at Reconnect HDI
At Reconnect Health Development Initiative, we are committed to bridging the gaps that prevent people from accessing mental health care.
We believe solutions must not only be clinically sound, but also socially and culturally responsive.
This milestone reflects what is possible when innovation meets understanding, and when care is designed with people, not just systems, in mind.
Be Part of This Change
There is still much more to be done.
More women need access. More awareness must be created. More support systems must be built.
We invite individuals, organisations, and partners who share this vision to support this work, whether through collaboration, funding, advocacy, or outreach.
